Back Home

How long since I been home?
Hmm, I just don't know,
Once I got it in my mind to roam,
Well, I just had to go.
Over time I guess I just lost touch,
Didn't think I'd miss a place so much.

Ooh, (Back home) I'll be walking down the street,
(Back home) Smile at everyone I meet,
(Back home) Where the music sounds so sweet,
And it goes like this…a little bit like this.

( It sure sounds sweet down on Cherry Street .)

How long have I been ‘round here?
Hmm, I just can't say,
Why I stay ain't exactly clear
Hmm, I been too long away.
Over time I guess I just lost touch
Never thought I'd miss a place so much

Ooh, (Back home) I'll be walking down the street,
(Back home) Smile at everyone I meet,
(Back home) Where the music sounds so sweet,
And it goes like this…a little bit like this.

(They sure can play down in Macon G-A.)

So long, I'm on my way.
Hmm, got no time to lose,
I hate to leave you, but I just can't stay
Hmm, with these homesick blues.
Over time I guess I just lost touch
Didn't think I'd miss the place so much

Ooh, (Back home) I'll be walking down the street,
(Back home) Smile at everyone I meet,
(Back home) Where the music sounds so sweet,
And it goes like this…a little bit like this.

I had just played this song at a club in Birmingham and mentioned that it was about Macon , Georgia -my hometown. Out of the dark some fellow yelled out. “But that's only three hours away!”

He was downright disappointed.

I suppose the distance involved is proportional to its emotional punch for some. But the fact is I hadn't been back home for years at the time. So whenever I perform it these days, just to be on the safe side, I always say my hometown is somewhere far enough away to matter…like London or Perth !
